Alexandria, VA — Jerry Torres on Wednesday commended the United States Supreme Court for its decision supporting Virginia’s authority to uphold the integrity of its voter rolls, calling it a "significant victory for election integrity and the rule of law."

“The Supreme Court’s ruling is a reminder that federal oversight shouldn’t compromise state sovereignty when it comes to managing and protecting the accuracy of voter rolls,” Torres said in a statement. “Virginia’s approach respects the individual rights of citizens while preserving the clarity and fairness of the electoral process. The decision strengthened our democratic foundation by ensuring that every American’s vote counts.”

The court’s decision temporarily halts a lower court order that would have forced Virginia to reinstate around 1,600 individuals who had self-identified as non-citizens. The Biden administration’s Justice Department filed suit against Virginia in October seeking to keep the self-identified foreign nationals on voter rolls.

Torres praised Virginia’s “fair and commonsense” process, and for removing individuals from voter rolls only after they had voluntarily confirmed their non-citizen status to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Attorneys for the state asked the court to "restore the status quo," arguing that doing so "would comply with the law and enable Virginia to ensure that noncitizens do not vote in the upcoming election." They also noted that the “Constitution leaves decisions about voter qualifications to the people of Virginia,” and that “the people of Virginia have decided that noncitizens are not permitted to vote."

Torres commended Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares for their "strong defense of Virginia’s election integrity laws” and condemned Democrats for seeking to undermine the election.

"By attempting to force non-citizens onto Virginia’s voter rolls, Democrats — including Rep. Don Beyer — are showing blatant disregard for the integrity of our elections and the voice of U.S. citizens,” Torres added.
