Friends,
Today is a poignant day for me. It’s the anniversary of my father's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. However, there's more to this day than just remembrance. It's a stark reminder of the importance of active, responsive representation in Congress.
My father, Juan Manuel Torres, died 168 days before we could lay him to rest. That delay was caused directly by the inaction of our congressman, Don Beyer. During the peak of the Covid-19 crisis, many families faced similar waits for burials in national cemeteries. A simple request from a congressman could expedite these processes, showing compassion during times of grief. Despite reaching out numerous times — through calls, letters, emails, and personal visits — neither Congressman Beyer nor his office responded to our pleas for help. He was absent, nonchalant, and disassociated. I have since learned that this is just how he operates.
This experience has shown me the depth of neglect that can occur when representation becomes mere formality rather than a commitment to service. That’s one reason I’m running for office today. I am running not just to enter Congress — and unseat Don Beyer — but to bring about a change where every constituent matters, and where responsiveness is not just an ideal but a practice. I believe in a government that listens, that acts, and that stands with its people in their darkest hours.
I ask for your support, your voice, and your vote in this campaign. Together, we can turn the page from neglect to engagement. Let's make our representation in Congress truly representative of our community's needs and values.
Sincerely,
Jerry Torres
