Alexandria, VA — As the clock ticks down to Election Day, the voters of Virginia's 8th District are facing an unprecedented situation: an incumbent who is refusing to participate in the democratic process of debate.

On Oct. 11, the Jerry Torres campaign issued a letter formally inviting Rep. Don Beyer to participate in a debate with him about the issues facing voters in the 2024 election — and Rep. Beyer declined the invitation. Instead, he falsely said that previous civic events where he ran into his opponents had already constituted "debates," and that no further engagement with the public was necessary.

His refusal to participate in a public forum with his chief opponent doesn’t just undermine the American tradition of political engagement. It represents an attack on the constituents of the 8th District, who are being deprived of a vital opportunity to scrutinize Rep. Beyer’s policies and vision for the future.

Under Rep. Beyer’s leadership, residents of Congressional District 8 have suffered from rampant crime. MS-13 has been allowed to take over homes and apartments in our region, turning it into a magnet for transnational criminal gangs. Average working Americans, meanwhile, have been robbed of their ability to purchase homes in the broken Biden-Harris economy — which Rep. Beyer supports. So while it is concerning that Rep. Beyer is unwilling to explain his positions in front of voters, maybe it is not surprising.

In an era where transparency and direct engagement with constituents are more important than ever, Rep. Beyer's choice to sidestep a debate is especially concerning. Debates are a cornerstone of democratic accountability that allow voters to make informed decisions when they vote.

"We are deeply disappointed by Rep. Beyer's refusal to engage with voters," said Rudy August, a spokesman for the Torres campaign. "Rep. Beyer has chosen to bypass an essential democratic process, leaving his constituents in the dark when it comes to his views."

Rep. Beyer’s decision to dodge a debate is more than a missed opportunity. It's a statement about how he feels on the value of engaging directly with the electorate. As we approach this election, the actions of our representatives speak volumes about their commitment to democratic principles. The Jerry Torres campaign is committed to bringing forward the issues that matter to voters and ensuring that the voices of all constituents are heard.
